When might children need sleep dentistry?

Many kids simply don't feel comfortable about visiting the dentist. This could be due to negative past experiences, unfamiliar sights, sounds and smells, or perhaps a phobia of needles or the drill. Others feel uncomfortable with what may feel like an invasion of personal space when the dentist is examining the insides of other mouths. Yet other children have disabilities that make dental treatment without sedation or anaesthesia difficult or even impossible.

If any of these issues affect your child, we can help.

Our friendly dentists love working with kids! Meet the team.

Sleep Dentistry for Children

General anesthesia is the procedure by which your child will be given a medicine to put her into a deep sleep – an unconscious state.

Before we consider anaesthesia or sedation for a child, as with any patient, a thorough medical examination and blood work will be used to screen for any potential issues.

Depending on the procedure your child is undergoing, the severity of dental anxiety, and a variety of other factors, we may use IV sedation, oral sedation, or general anesthesia.

Your dentist will discuss all the sedation options with you prior to the procedure, and recommend the most appropriate one for your child.

Throughout the dental sedation or anaesthesia procedure, your child will be carefully and continuously monitored.

Our Anesthesiologists are fully qualified to work with children, and will make sure that your child is completely safe and comfortable for the duration of the dental procedure.

After the Procedure

Parents are typically asked to be present while the child awakens after the sedation of anaesthesia appointment. Your child may feel a fussy, confused and/or nauseated as the medicine wears off. Tow adults should accompany the child home: one to drive, and the other to sit with and monitor the child during the ride.

After effects include temporary loss of physical coordination, dizziness, sleepiness and nausea. This means that going back to school or daycare is not an option on the day of the procedure.
